Prepare for a new job

Utilize expert tips and techniques that give you an edge on your resume and in your interview process.

Resume Writing

The Resume is Your Sales Brochure. It is a one to two-page summary of your work experience, education, skills, qualifications, and accomplishments – the critical first impression of you as a strong candidate for an interview.

Pro tip: Articulate in your resume what you MADE, SAVED, and or ACHIEVED.

Get the best of you on the top ¼ of the resume:

Fold your resume in half and look at the top ¼. Based on what you see, would you call yourself in for an interview?

Cover Letter Tips

If you’re applying for a specific position with Monarch a cover letter is not required.

In fact, you would only supply a cover letter if requested to do so.

Remember these points:

  1. Whenever possible, address the letter directly to a specific person – preferably the person who is making the hiring decision.

  2. Be yourself in the letter, but don’t be cute or overconfident.

  3. Explain how your skills fit the employer’s needs and how you can contribute to the needs of the company.

  4. Read the job posting carefully and address each point within the cover letter.

Interview Skills

Prospective employers will want to know the answers to these questions about you during the interview:

• How resourceful are you?

• Are you flexible and dependable?

• What are your key accomplishments?

• Will you fit into the culture of the company?

• Do you show enthusiasm about the position?

• Do you have the skills and qualifications to do the job?

• What problem solving, and critical thinking skills do you have?

Video Interviews

  • Install a virtual background when possible. If that isn’t possible for you, position your back against a wall or have a background that is not disruptive or distracting. This will help you stand out and look professional.

  • Check your technology. Is the program you need for the interview (teams, Zoom, etc.) installed? Can you access that program easily? Does your microphone and/or speakers work? Is your camera working?

  • Turn your camera on and inspect the lighting beforehand to see how you look. Is the image too dark or too light? Make your adjustments prior to the call so you are immediately clear to the viewer.

  • Have your resume and the job description handy.

  • Be ready to articulate your skills & abilities and how you best matchup for the role.

  • Put on your genuine smile and come off relatable and lively.
